Introduction
You have doubtless rewritten a poem once before. Maybe even several times. But have you ever converted the ideas from one piece into another form entirely? This month, you'll get the chance to do just that. Our September contest here at Multhaiku is for you to rewrite an original poem as a haiku.
Examples, courtesy of hopeburnsblue, contest originator:
Original poem:
To the MoonAs I sit in your silent company,
gazing up at your brilliant form,
I realize why wolves
incline their heads to you
in their own version of "Moonlight Sonata."
I can feel you reeling in
the tide of my restless soul,
and as the breeze tousles my hair,
I begin to glimpse a ray of hope.
Though I cannot see your wise old face,
I can sometimes make out your misty aura;
like a compass, you guide me by some miracle
as I tentatively start down the sidewalk.
You alone have seen many a night
when I and another silhouette
traversed that familiar path,
together,
smiling,
hand in hand.
And now, though I am as solitary as you,
it feels as though you are my own kind of Northern Star,
pointing toward my Bethlehem,
my Mecca,
a link to the past
that I can only hope will come full circle
to my future.
Then your soft but insistent glow
calls me back to the present,
and it's as if I'm seeing you for the first time.
I wish I could be as whole
and as bright as you.
Haiku version:
To the Moon (Haiku Version)Rare pearl in the sky,
you allure my soul tonight
as though I'm the tide.
So often, we write at length to say something, whereas haiku allows for the same
complex idea to be conveyed in a simpler and more succinct, yet still powerful, way. We all do this here at Multhaiku, thinking in haiku and putting those thoughts on paper. But with the added layer of a poem-to-haiku conversion, this presents an extra challenge. Are you up for it?
Rules
Your original poem must be at least eight lines in length and not of any Eastern poetic origin.Be sure to include the original piece in your artist's description, as well a a link to this contest journal.
Submit your entry/entries to the Recycled Haiku Contest folder in our gallery.
You may enter up to two recycled haiku.
Deadline is Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 11:59 P.M. CDT (GMT - 5:00).
